WHO IS BEATRICE CAPOTE?

Beatrice Capote is a Cuban American contemporary dancer, choreographer, and educator known for her unique fusion of Contemporary dance forms using Afro-Cuban dance mediums. She is the creator of Capotechnique/Capotecnica, a dance technique that combines traditional Cuban movement with modern dance vocabulary.

In addition to her work as a dancer and choreographer, Capote is an experienced educator who teaches Afro-Cuban folklore, dances of the Orishas, Rumba Cubana, and contemporary dance.

Beatrice Capote's choreographic work centers around sharing the narratives of Black women who have been revolutionary, but whose stories have often gone untold in history.

She has an impressive performance and choreographic history, having served as the choreographer for Citrus, a chore-poem play at Northern Stages, and The Wedding Band Musical at Montclair State University. She has also received choreographic commissions from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and The Dark Elegy Project, inspired by Suse Lowenstein and performed at Gibney Dance. Her work has been featured in major festivals and venues, including West Fest Dance Festival, Battery Dance Festival, BAAD! ASS Women’s Festival, Amherst College, Casita Maria!, Contemporary Dance Series at Bryant Park, Vision Festival, and more.

Capote began her training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and received her A.A. from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She went on to earn a B.A. in Dance Education and an MFA in Dance from Montclair State University. Her MFA thesis choreography was featured on Bronx NETTV.

Capote has performed with prestigious companies such as INSPIRIT, a dance company, and Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion. She is currently a member of Bessie Award-winning Camille A. Brown & Dancers.

Capote has also contributed to the dance community in a variety of ways. She co-curated Pepatián’s Dancing La Botanica: La Tierra Vive project and Bronx Arts and Conversation showcase under the direction of Pepatián South Bronx. She was also a co-founder of the Sabrosura Effect, performing at the Salsa Dance Congress Festivals in New York City.

Capote is an experienced educator and has taught at a variety of institutions, including Montclair State University, The Ailey School, Gibney Dance, and the Joffrey Ballet School. She has also served as a guest artist and mentor at many universities and dance institutions. Most recently, she choreographed for the four-time Grammy winner Angelique Kidjo on her newest musical Yemandja!

Capote is currently an Associate Professor in the department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance at Indiana University.
